CONCEPTS:  ACIDS AND BASES

This lab packet is designed to help the student develop
the following concepts:

1.  What is an indicator?  Give three examples of an indicator and the colors of acids and bases involved.

2.  What is an acid, base and salt?  Give 2-3 examples of each.

3.  How do you recognize an acid, base or salt?

4.  What is pH?  What does pH scale look like?  Place the pH of 3 household acids, 3 household bases and 1 neutral substance on the scale.  Be able to read and interpret the pH scale.

5.  Name 3 examples of acid, base and salt properties.

6.  Which of the 4 types of reactions illustrates an acid base neutralization?  What are the reactants and products of the reaction?  What are the reactants and products of the reaction of an acid and a metal?  What type of reaction is this?  Give at least one example of this type reaction.

7.  Your body works in the acid condition.  What is the most acidic of the body fluids?

8.  What is the water cycle?  How does this cycle create acid rain?  What types of acids are involved in acid rain?  What is a major man made cause of acid rain?

9.  How does an atom become an ion?  Illustrate one example of producing a positive ion and one example of producing a negative ion.

10.  Construct and interpret data tables and graphs.

11. Use the Internet to extend understanding about acids and bases.
